Capoeira Instruments – the heart of roda!
Reco-reco
The reco-reco is an Afro-Brazilian percussion instrument. Traditionally, it is made out of bamboo or wood. The body has a cylindrical shape and several notches are engraved on one side to create a playing surface. It is then played by rubbing a wooden stick over the notched side.
This instrument is also made of a metallic cylinder with springs attached and played with a metal stick.
In Capoeira this is the last instrument to enter the capoeira bateria, but it is sometimes used in Maculelê and Samba de Roda.
It is also known as caracaxá, querequexé or raspador.
